What Is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic care is a healthcare profession focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders affecting the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine, joints, muscles, and surrounding tissues. Chiropractors use a variety of treatment methods, including spinal manipulation (adjustments), soft tissue therapies, rehabilitative exercises, and lifestyle recommendations to help patients improve function, reduce pain, and support overall health.
The foundation of chiropractic care is based on the relationship between the body's structure and its ability to function properly. When joints become restricted or do not move as intended, it can contribute to pain, stiffness, decreased mobility, and altered movement patterns. Chiropractic treatment aims to restore normal joint motion and improve the body's ability to move comfortably and efficiently.
What Causes the "Popping" Sound During an Adjustment?
One of the most common questions patients ask is about the popping or cracking sound that may occur during a chiropractic adjustment. This sound, known as “joint cavitation”, occurs when a quick, controlled force is applied to a joint. The movement causes a rapid change in pressure within the joint capsule, leading to the formation and collapse of tiny gas bubbles in the joint fluid. In other words, gas leaving a joint!
Importantly, the sound itself is not the goal of treatment. Some adjustments produce an audible release, while others do not. Research suggests that the effectiveness of an adjustment is not determined by whether a popping sound is heard. The primary objective is to improve joint mobility and function, regardless of whether cavitation occurs.
Benefits of Chiropractic Care
Many patients seek chiropractic care for neck pain, back pain, headaches, sports injuries, and other musculoskeletal conditions. Research has shown that spinal manipulation can be an effective treatment option for certain types of acute and chronic low back pain, neck pain, and some headache disorders.
In addition to pain relief, chiropractic care may help:
-
Improve joint mobility and flexibility
-
Reduce muscle tension and stiffness
-
Enhance movement and physical function
-
Support recovery from injuries
-
Improve posture and movement patterns
-
Complement exercise and rehabilitation program
Because every patient is unique, treatment plans are tailored to individual needs and may include a combination of adjustments, soft tissue therapies, corrective exercises, and education.
Chiropractic Care and Disc-Related Conditions
Spinal discs act as cushions between the vertebrae and help absorb forces placed on the spine. Conditions such as disc bulges, disc herniations, and degenerative disc changes can sometimes contribute to back pain, neck pain, numbness, tingling, or radiating symptoms into the arms or legs.
While chiropractic care does not "push a disc back into place," treatment may help improve spinal motion, reduce mechanical stress on affected tissues, and address movement restrictions that can contribute to symptoms. Many treatment plans for disc-related conditions also include specific exercises, stretching, posture education, and activity modifications designed to support healing and improve function.
A thorough examination is important to determine whether chiropractic care is appropriate for a particular disc condition and to identify when additional medical evaluation may be necessary.
Chiropractic's Effect on the Nervous System
The spine houses and protects the spinal cord, a major component of the nervous system. The nervous system continuously communicates between the brain and the rest of the body, coordinating movement, sensation, and countless other functions.
Research suggests that spinal manipulation may influence the way the nervous system
processes information from joints, muscles, and surrounding tissues. By improving joint motion and reducing irritation of sensitive structures, chiropractic care can help normalize movement patterns and improve communication between the brain and body.
Although chiropractic care is not a treatment for diseases of the nervous system, restoring healthy movement within the spine and extremities may positively affect how the body perceives pain, controls movement, and responds to physical stress.
Supporting the Musculoskeletal System
The musculoskeletal system consists of the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and connective tissues that allow the body to move and function. Injury, repetitive stress, poor posture, prolonged sitting, athletic activity, and everyday wear and tear can all affect how these structures work together.
Chiropractic care focuses on optimizing movement and function within this system. By
addressing joint restrictions, muscle imbalances, and movement dysfunctions, chiropractors help patients move more efficiently and comfortably. Combined with exercise, rehabilitation, and healthy lifestyle habits, chiropractic care can play an important role in maintaining mobility, reducing discomfort, and supporting long-term musculoskeletal health.
Our Approach
At HealthQuest Chiropractic, we believe in an evidence-informed, patient-centered approach to care. Treatment plans are designed around each patient's unique goals and may incorporate chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue therapies, rehabilitative exercise, cupping, kinesiology taping, and other supportive treatments to help patients move better, feel better, and return to the activities they enjoy.
That means:
● We focus on how your body moves and functions
● We look for mechanical and neurological contributors to pain
● We aim to restore normal joint motion and reduce compensations
● We prioritize long-term improvement over temporary relief
